Victoria Harbour in Melbourne’s Docklands faces significant water quality challenges due to urban runoff and oil pollution, threatening its thriving ecosystem. This project investigates how waste materials, particularly coffee grounds, can be integrated into nature-based filtration solutions to mitigate oil discharge in urban waterways. Through analysis of existing conditions and pollution sources, the research develops a cost-effective and easy-to-install filtering device that leverages existing infrastructure (e.g., Seabins and Pillars) while maintaining urban design sensitivity. By demonstrating the viability of sustainable filtration systems in busy urban settings, this project contributes to the broader discourse on urban waterway restoration and community-conscious environmental solutions.
