With public concern about plastic pollution rising, consumers are reaching for canvas bags, metal straws, and reusable water bottles. But while individuals fret over images of oceanic garbage gyres, the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries are pouring billions of dollars into new plants intended to make millions more tons of plastic than they now pump out. Genuine bioplastics are plastics produced from renewable and biodegradable biomass sources such as fats or starch. Over the span of this studio, students investigated how such bioplastics could be used to design elegant, effective and creative solutions adapted to the circular economy and 21st century narratives.
